Southland Sport Medical Clinic Flyer vector created by pch.vector - www.freepik.com Important Message Welcome to Southland Sport Medicine. Our doctors are sport medicine specialists trained to help you with most musculoskeletal (muscle and joint) problems. We are NOT surgeons, rheumatologists (doctors trained to deal with forms of arthritis other than osteoarthritis) or physiotherapists. We are trained to evaluate and recommend non - surgical treatment options such as home exercises, physiotherapy or chiropractic treatment. Occasionally we will recommend an injection to help with your pain. Some of these injections can be done in the office; others may need to be performed by a radiologist under x - ray guidance. We do not see our role simply as a route into a surgeon’s office. We are also not chronic pain specialists, but we do see many patients who have had musculoskeletal pain for prolonged periods of time. We are happy to see patients with both sport and non - sport related pain or injury. We do NOT see WCB patients or patients involved in litigation as we do not provide medical - legal reports. A referral (from a physician, physiotherapist, chiropractor, or podiatrist) is required for you to be seen in our clinic. We read every referral that we receive and triage each one so more urgent problems can be seen more quickly. If you believe that you have an urgent musculoskeletal problem, please have your referring practitioner communicate this to us in the referral letter; but bear in mind that being in pain does not imply urgency; every patient that we assess is in pain. Urgency usually relates to whether an acute injury will have a better outcome if treated more promptly. Chronic problems are generally not urgent despite occasionally being a cause of severe pain. Southland Sport Medicine is a teaching clinic. You will usually be assessed first by a Family Medicine resident (a family doctor in training). After they assess you, they will discuss your case with the doctor you were referred to and you will then be re - evaluated by both the resident and the doctor. The whole process should take anywhere from 20 - 45 minutes. Please understand that, in the interest of time, we can only assess 1 joint per visit (or 2 of the same joint if relevant). If you have more than 1 joint that requires assessment, please plan to book another appointment; this may require another referral. Our goal is to help you achieve an improved quality of life and to return to your desired activities as quickly as possible. I acknowledge Always call ahead because clinic schedules can change quickly.
